Tile Planning: How Much Extra Should You Buy?
A practical approach to estimating tile and allowing for cuts, layout, and breakage.
Measure the area first
Measure the length and width of the floor or wall you plan to cover. Multiply those measurements to calculate the area. For unusual rooms, break the space into rectangles, calculate each section, and add the results together.
Account for tile size and pattern
A straightforward grid layout creates less waste than a diagonal layout or a detailed pattern. Small rooms can also require more cuts around corners, plumbing, cabinets, and doorways. Check the actual tile dimensions rather than assuming the nominal size shown on the box.
Add a reasonable allowance
For a simple layout, a 10 percent allowance is a common planning starting point. Consider a larger allowance for diagonal patterns, irregular spaces, or tiles with a noticeable pattern that must line up. Keeping a few extra tiles can also make future repairs much easier.
